ISO 42001
ISO/IEC 42001 specifying requirements for an artificial intelligence management system (AIMS).
ISO/IEC 42001 is the world's first international management-system standard for artificial intelligence. It specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an AI management system (AIMS), giving organisations a structured, certifiable way to govern the development and use of AI responsibly. It follows the same high-level structure as other ISO management-system standards, so it integrates with ISO/IEC 27001 and similar frameworks.
Published in December 2023, ISO/IEC 42001 addresses AI-specific concerns such as risk and impact assessment, data quality, transparency, and human oversight across the AI lifecycle. It is increasingly used as a practical governance backbone that helps organisations align with emerging AI regulation, including the EU AI Act.
Set AI objectives, policies, roles, and accountability within a formal AI management system.
Assess risks and impacts of AI systems, including effects on individuals and society.
Apply controls across data, development, deployment, and monitoring of AI systems.
Ensure staff competence, monitor performance, and continually improve the AI management system.
