NIST AI RMF
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed the AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) to help organizations manage risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0) is a voluntary framework from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology for managing the risks of artificial intelligence. It helps organisations build trustworthy AI by incorporating considerations such as validity, safety, security, accountability, transparency, fairness, and privacy across the entire AI lifecycle, from design through deployment and monitoring.
Published in January 2023, the framework is organised around four core functions — Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage — that help organisations understand and act on AI risks. It is technology-neutral and widely referenced internationally; a Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1) extends it to generative AI.
Establish a culture of AI risk management with policies, roles, and accountability.
Establish the context and identify risks associated with each AI system.
Assess, analyse, and track AI risks using quantitative and qualitative methods.
Prioritise and act on AI risks, allocating resources and monitoring over time.
