CCPA
California's CCPA empowers residents to control their personal data. Businesses must disclose data practices, respond to access/deletion requests, and protect data.
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is the leading US state privacy law, giving California residents rights over the personal information that businesses collect about them. It requires businesses to be transparent about their data practices and to honour consumer requests, and it was significantly expanded by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), which created a dedicated regulator.
The CCPA took effect on 1 January 2020, with enforcement from 1 July 2020; the CPRA amendments took effect on 1 January 2023, adding rights such as correction and the ability to limit the use of sensitive personal information. Enforcement is shared between the California Privacy Protection Agency and the California Attorney General.
Provide notice at collection and a clear privacy policy describing data practices and consumer rights.
Enable rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
Offer a clear mechanism for consumers to opt out of the sale or sharing of their data.
Maintain reasonable security and put compliant contracts in place with service providers and contractors.
