PCI DSS
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) was developed to encourage and enhance payment card account data security and facilitate the broad adoption of consistent data security measures globally.
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is the global security standard for organisations that store, process, or transmit payment card data. Maintained by the PCI Security Standards Council (founded by the major card brands), it defines technical and operational requirements designed to protect cardholder data and reduce payment fraud.
PCI DSS is enforced contractually through the card brands and acquiring banks rather than by statute. Version 4.0 introduced a modernised, more flexible approach; its future-dated requirements became mandatory on 31 March 2025, and v4.0.1 is the current release. Compliance is validated through a Report on Compliance or a Self-Assessment Questionnaire, depending on the organisation's size and role.
